this is 11 news at 6 p.m. >> 11 news has learned that delegate don dwyer who was arrested tuesday for a dui faces another challenge. that is our big story at 6 p.m. this latest helmet is on the political front. some of his colleagues are calling for his resignation. >> one of his longtime constituents is announcing plans to run against him. david collins joins us live from glen burnie with more. hour, lifelong has been a resident gus kurtz is announcing his plans to take dwyer's seat. gus kurtz is already a household name. the developer and committee act of his believes he is qualified to defeat delegate don dwyer and shake things up in annapolis. >> i would like to represent my district with honesty and integrity. >> delegate dwyer is facing a serious personal challenge for

-- in the wake of being arrested a second time for dui. after observing him speeding and routeg erratically on 100. his car registration had also expired. police say dwyer had performed poorly on field to brady tests and refused a breathalyzer. the second arrest comes as wire the way to sentencing for driving a boat while intoxicated. his boat collided with another. several children and he himself were hurt. this is a personal matter and for that person and i hope he gets the help that he needs. >> kurtz says he has been considering running for office for many years but this period of this life feels like the time is life -- right. in pasadena was

organized month ago. >> i bring a lot of energy, i bring the fact that i have been a small businessman and have been in business for 30 plus years, and i have a business approach to things, and the policies now, some of the tax- and-spend policies are not business friendly. >> kurtz is also a gun right advocate, pledging to holding the line on the eroding of the second amendment. he proposed the sand ground legislation and pledges to enact stricter sentencing guidelines for criminals. >> i am in touch with the voters . i do business in district 31. i live there, i shop there, i raise my family there. i know what our district needs and i know what our district wants created >> although they share similar views on issues, kurtz says he and dwyer are not cut from the same. :00. he said dwyer can come across as extreme. >> thank you.

authorities are on the lookout for two men who they say are responsible for a home invasion and anne arundel county. we are told 10:15 p.m. thursday, the two men burst into a home in laurel knocking down a 60-year- old woman inside and ransacked the place. the suspects were armed with some sort of weapon and they made off with property. detectives are investigating. also my pedestrian was struck and killed i a train in rosedale. authorities tell us the victim was hit before 4:30 p.m. at batavia farm road and give all avenue -- duval avenue. and skyin roy taylor team 11 have been keeping track. the delays remain after a trash truck hit overhead wires. the incident caused mta to shut down service between hunt valley and timonium road stations. we will head out to captain roy

taylor@i-team 11. he has an update. >> between the timonium station and hunt valley, they do have one track that is open. not too big of a deal up this way. in two hours, 8 p.m. tonight, they will shut down service between timonium and hunt valley as far as the light rail goes and have a bus bridge there because they want to fix the power line. they need to get the southbound track done so they need to shut down light rail service in timonium between timonium and hunt valley at 8 p.m. tonight and that way you will be dealing with the bus corruption -- correction. i am captain roy taylor. >> this year's baltimore maryland -- marathon has a change. organizers tell us the company gave notice months ago saying it

wanted to work another community project. the marathon is october 12. >> we had some showers around the area today helping to keep the temperatures down but the rain is moving out in time for a nice-looking weekend and in time for the o's baseball. those showers will be out of here in the next few minutes if it has not stopped in your backyard. most areas to the north and west are seeing the drying trend. a little while longer on the eastern shore and down toward annapolis where the rain may linger for another hour or so. for most locations it has been unusually comfortable august afternoon because of the clouds and showers. in the low 70's now to the north. we can temperatures look like they will be quite nice. more on that in a few minutes. >> this weekend, thousands of converging -- thousands are converging on the nation's capital to reenact the famous march on washington.

tomorrow marks the 50th anniversary. we sat down with one family who wrote the bus to d.c. on that day in 1963. chambers still remember's the song she sang 50 years ago. ♪ songs that served as the soundtrack of her experience and thousands of others on the march on washington. ♪ oh freedom she kept her music sheet and plenty of other memorabilia. like his organizing manual featuring the event lineup. and other icons of the civil rights movement. she made sure she had her front seat. >> i was standing down from where the speaker was. i was so tickled because it could look right up and see him.

to healing. we are about keeping young people alive and safe and free. eve on their way to washington, organizers spent time with young people, sharing stories and strategies to help them deal with such pressing issues as like on black crime. >> we are here to say that 50 years later we still have something to fight for. that dream has not been fully realized that we have to fight very hard with everythi we have to make sure our young people are safe, that they are not incarcerated. if we can read channel that energy and lifted up that all that pressure will turn this: two diamonds. >> once you get on this bus, there is much that must be said and done. are seeds of encouragement.

this next story is about the nrs impact a teacher can have on her students. >> that teacher is erica brannock. she helped kick off a brand-new year at a brand-new school. >> and those super cute students were over the moon to see her again. new independent preschool in towson. the founder said they had their fair share of challenges and hardships getting it open but the hardest was april 15.

the day of the boston marathon. months since henry baker saw his preschool teacher. >> he sees her and it is, miss brannock. he is happy to see her. tohenry and students got see her. >> i love you. >> i love you, too, buddy. they have all gotten so big since the last time i saw them. it has been a few months. >> erica has been away as she continues to recover from injuries from the boston marathon bombing. >> i have my good days and my bad days. it is getting used to having to slow down a little bit. >> she may have been absent from

the classroom but not from the hearts of these little kids. >> she loves her. she cannot go a minute without talking to her. she keeps her picture on her dresser and talks to her everyday when she cannot see her in person. >> the children and parents were here here for the opening of the new davenport preschool in towson. ages two 100 kids through four. erica is one of 18 teachers. they cut the ribbon to start the new school year and this community says erica has been an inspiration. >> the best thing that she has done for us is to make us realize there are tougher things in life that we go through challenges and she is an aspiration to keep the momentum going. when a tragedy happened, it brought the whole community back together again. it is hard be away from your students. -- being away from your students. hard to be away from your

kids because they have your heart. great doctors and great people helping to get her better. to you?s. brannick >> my teacher. and my best friend. >> those kids are not being polite. they cannot help but be totally truthful and honest. she has become a key part of the center. a learning garden was built in her honor. temperatures down below normal today because of the clouds and showers around. 85 is still the normal high. nowhere near the record high of 98 set in 1960.

we were at 67 for the low so far today. clouds and showers were around so the temperatures have not touched much. it is only 70 at the airport. hard to believe we hit 80 this afternoon. most of the day these temperatures have been down in the 70's. the rain is just about done. not much showing up on radar. the last drops pushing through downtown baltimore toward the eastern shore and they will be gone in the next hour or two. it looks like we have dodged the rain as far as orioles baseball goes in downtown baltimore. the skies are clearing. they can see western maryland enjoying clearing skies area that will continue to progress into baltimore as well. we are home free for the weekend. 74 at edward. -- edgewood. ocean city at 78. 68 at oakland and garrett counties.

the rain moves out and the skies clear. mid-50's in this excerpt -- in the suburbs. there is some nice weather coming in. high-pressure out of canada over the northern part of the great lakes. this provides us with sunny skies and most league clear night except for the fact that tomorrow afternoon a few sprinkles may pop up. we are going to get underway with clear skies in the early morning across the region. see those showers up there? as the winds turn to the northeast must some moisture comes down out of the coastal areas across the eastern shore. it may pop a few lights wrinkles or rain showers tomorrow afternoon, especially areas south and east of baltimore. to the west it will be sunny. that east wind will bring enough moisture that it might produce a shower or a wrinkle in the area tomorrow afternoon especially on the eastern shore. temperatures will be below normal again. 7883 with that northeast wind at seven to 14 miles per hour.

the orioles trying to catch oakland in the wild-card standings and it was an interesting series that ended on wednesday when the orioles salvaged it taking the finale on wednesday night to get one of the three games. the orioles back of -- back of the leg. >> you would like to think that would not matter at all. our guys understand where we are and they understand the good things we have done to make the games meaningful. there is a bunch of games we won that did not look like they were -- we were going to win them. all that is behind us and here it is in front of us. >> it was another up and down performance by the baltimore ravens. step closer to ending the preseason.

brown has also racked up the most receiving yards from last night and he caught every target thrown his way. >> when we first saw him on tape , i saw him and he jumped off the tape but he had the acl. that was obviously something that was tough but he has come back from that very quickly and he is playing well. >> a beautiful night for baseball books like clearing skies. tom has the details. ♪
